An interview with Marion Harris, Community Health Nurse and Educator, WISDOM Study Advisor <\/em><\/p>\n

Marion became a nurse at 18, long before she knew how profoundly her career\u2014and her courage\u2014would shape the lives of others. What pushed her toward nursing wasn\u2019t a lifelong plan but a summer spent working in a sweltering glass factory in Tampa, Florida. \u201cIt only took me half the summer to realize I was not a lifetime factory worker,\u201d she recalls. Her grandmother nudged her toward the field, recognizing her compassion and strength long before she recognized it in herself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>She enrolled in community college, earned her bachelor\u2019s degree, and\u2014decades later, in her 50s\u2014returned for dual master\u2019s degrees in nursing and education. \u201cI loved nursing,\u201d she said simply. Her passion for caring for others never wavered. But it was breast cancer\u2014twice\u2014that redirected her life\u2019s purpose.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Young Woman, Unheard<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marion\u2019s path with breast cancer began unusually early. At 17, she had a lump removed with little explanation offered. At 28, she found another mass\u2014and this time, she trusted her instincts. But getting her concerns taken seriously proved to be a battle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For three years she pushed for a biopsy. \u201cI just felt off-center,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew something wasn\u2019t right.\u201d Yet her doctor dismissed her concerns, calling her dramatic, telling her she was \u201ctoo young\u201d for a mammogram.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>When he finally agreed to a biopsy\u2014\u201cso you can stop bugging me\u201d\u2014Marion woke up not in an outpatient clinic, but in a hospital bed. Seconds into consciousness, she knew what that meant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Late that night the doctor confirmed it: breast cancer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she asked about her options, the surgeon recommended a modified radical mastectomy\u2014because he had \u201cgood success with it\u201d\u2014and discouraged her request for a bilateral procedure. \u201cThere you go again being hysterical,\u201d he said, insisting she shouldn\u2019t have breast cancer at all based on her lifestyle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She was given no time for a second opinion. Surgery was scheduled for the next morning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I was a nurse, I had never seen a woman with breast cancer who wasn\u2019t stage 4,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I said okay\u2014let\u2019s get it done.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Surviving, Then Fighting Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marion\u2019s mastectomy left her with a long vertical scar from armpit to chest wall\u2014a reminder of an era when treatment decisions lacked sensitivity, options, and collaboration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But she had children to raise and a life to restructure. \u201cMy breasts were the least of my concern,\u201d she said. \u201cI was fighting for my life.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Information she needed didn\u2019t come from her surgeon\u2014it came from her colleagues, who quietly helped her access her pathology results. \u201cI found out I didn\u2019t have metastatic disease through my own network,\u201d she said. \u201cNot from my doctor.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was the moment Marion became the advocate she needed. \u201cI was getting second opinions before anyone thought about second opinions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Years later, after moving to California, a new mass appeared only two months after a mammogram. Her oncologist listened, acted quickly, and confirmed recurrence. She underwent her second mastectomy and chemotherapy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Turning Point: Understanding Her Genetics<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In her 50s, Marion began hearing about genetic testing. Again, she asked her doctor for it. Again, she was dismissed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me it wasn\u2019t necessary.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So she marched to her oncologist\u2019s office. \u201cHey Peggy,\u201d she told the nurse she trusted. \u201cI hear there\u2019s gene testing available. Can I talk to the doctor about it?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This time, she was heard. Genetic testing revealed she carried a BRCA2 mutation\u2014information that explained her early cancers and empowered her to advocate for the preventive surgeries she needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her gynecologist insisted her uterus was \u201cperfect\u201d and unnecessary to remove, even with her mutation. But she persisted and ultimately underwent a hysterectomy and oophorectomy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe came to my bedside and said, \u2018It\u2019s a beautiful uterus,\u2019\u201d she recalls. Her response: \u201cI\u2019m glad to hear that. Give it to someone who needs it\u2014because it\u2019s death to me.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From Patient to Advocate<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marion\u2019s advocacy began almost immediately after her first cancer diagnosis. The American Cancer Society sent her a Reach to Recovery volunteer\u2014an elderly white woman whose kind words couldn\u2019t touch the unique fears of a 31-year-old Black single mother facing a life-altering diagnosis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciated her,\u201d she said, \u201cbut she couldn\u2019t understand my life. I knew other women like me had to be out there.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So Marion became a volunteer herself\u2014then a leader, mentor, and force for change. She served in Reach to Recovery, Look Good Feel Better, chaired Relay for Life events, and led East Bay fundraising efforts. She trained more than 200 nurses as a faith community nurse, bringing culturally grounded health education to churches across the Bay Area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBreast cancer gave me my life,\u201d she said. \u201cIt taught me what\u2019s important\u2014being present for my family, my community, and giving more than I take.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Marion Believes in WISDOM<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Marion learned about the WISDOM Study, she recognized something she\u2019d rarely experienced: women being offered information <\/span>before<\/span><\/i> disease, and being given a say in their care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s potentially lifesaving,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marions story is one of courage and self-advocacy. Many of the trials she went through were a product of poor communication within her hospitals, and policies that have since been improved through work by woman advocates such as Marion, and we thank her for her work and her priceless service.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mastectomies have a long history of leaving woman feeling violated or unfit, but the process has been improved over decades of practice and research. Make sure to talk to your doctor about your expectations for the outcomes of a mastectomy or lumpectomy to ensure that you remain comfortable with your body.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
