My DNA.\u00a0 A feeling that felt familiar. I couldn\u2019t quite put my finger on it, but it was as if I had felt it before \u2014 a sense of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu that I came to recognize as the feeling of <\/span>cancer<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

This realization wasn\u2019t just physical \u2014 it was ancestral. My DNA had felt this before. Let me explain.<\/span><\/p>

My Great Grandmother\u2019s Strength<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

The presence of cancer was first felt by my great-grandmother,\u00a0<\/span>Marie Pryor<\/span>, a 4\u201911\u201d half Black and half Cherokee woman, born on\u00a0<\/span>May 10, 1910<\/span>, in South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>

Marie was married and birthed eleven children. She was a phenomenal cook, gardener, baker, wife, mother, friend, and child of God. Later in life, she was diagnosed with\u00a0<\/span>breast cancer<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

Her experience mirrored that of her mother, grandmother, and ancestors \u2014 women who likely battled similar diseases that were unnamed or never spoken about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Living in rural South Carolina during Jim Crow, Marie endured polluted well water, long hours of work, little rest, and the constant weight of caring for her\u00a0family<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

All of these factors may have contributed to her diagnosis, but her\u00a0<\/span>resilience<\/span>\u00a0was just as deeply rooted as her pain. That strength was woven into our\u00a0family<\/span>\u2019s DNA, passed through generations.<\/span><\/p>

The Legacy of Cancer in My\u00a0Family<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Of Marie\u2019s eleven children, two are still living. The rest, including my grandmother, passed away from cancer:<\/span><\/p>

  2. Errol<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Lung Cancer<\/span><\/li>
  3. Herman<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Multiple Myeloma<\/span><\/li>
  4. Bobby<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Breast Cancer<\/span><\/li>
  5. Cora<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Breast Cancer<\/span><\/li>
  6. Chris<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Unknown (suspected cancer)<\/span><\/li>
  7. Ann<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Liver Cancer<\/span><\/li>
  8. Mattie<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Pancreatic Cancer<\/span><\/li>
  9. Lorraine Byrd Fields Latham<\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Multiple Myeloma<\/span><\/li><\/ol>

    Each name represents not just a diagnosis, but a story \u2014 of endurance, faith, and love.<\/span><\/p>

    A Legacy of Survival and Faith<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    Marie\u2019s daughter, my grandmother\u00a0<\/span>Lorraine Byrd Fields Latham<\/span>, was born on\u00a0<\/span>June 28, 1932<\/span>, in Enoree, South Carolina. Like her mother, she too faced a cancer diagnosis \u2014\u00a0<\/span>Multiple Myeloma<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

    She later migrated to Philadelphia to seek a better life for her\u00a0family<\/span>. Despite the hardships of segregation and limited opportunity, she carried a strand of resilience and deep faith. Lorraine birthed four children, was active in her community, and served as a devoted woman of God.<\/span><\/p>

    Her faith, strength, and perseverance became the foundation of our\u00a0family<\/span>\u2019s legacy.<\/span><\/p>

    My Mother\u2019s Story: Turning Pain into Power<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    Lorraine\u2019s youngest child and only daughter \u2014 my mother \u2014\u00a0<\/span>Narda J. Fields<\/span>, was born on\u00a0<\/span>September 30, 1961<\/span>, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Though she has not had cancer herself, she carries the\u00a0<\/span>emotional and epigenetic imprint<\/span>\u00a0of her mother\u2019s and grandmother\u2019s battles.<\/span><\/p>

    Instead of allowing that weight to define her, my mother turned pain into purpose. She is now a\u00a0<\/span>two-time author, humanitarian, chef, and nonprofit leader<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 a radiant example of what faith and resilience can create.<\/span><\/p>

    My Own Experience: Feeling the Weight of History<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    My name is\u00a0<\/span>Nia<\/span>\u00a0Imani Bailey<\/span>. I was born on\u00a0<\/span>August 26, 1992<\/span>, at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>

    I carry the stories and strength of the women before me \u2014 and, like them, I carry a genetic connection to cancer. I have a\u00a0<\/span>BCL6 gene mutation<\/span>, which increases my risk for lymphoma.<\/span><\/p>

    My father,\u00a0<\/span>Curry J. Bailey III<\/span>, was diagnosed with\u00a0<\/span>prostate cancer<\/span>\u00a0in 2008 and has been thriving ever since. My parents\u2019 transparency about our\u00a0family<\/span>\u2019s medical history has empowered me to live with awareness, not fear.<\/span><\/p>

    That\u2019s why I joined the\u00a0<\/span>WISDOM Study<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 to take proactive steps for my health, to have informed conversations with my doctor, and to ensure that future generations in my\u00a0family<\/span>\u00a0are better equipped and informed.<\/span><\/p>

    I was raised to believe that\u00a0<\/span>education is power<\/span>, that faith fuels action, and that prevention is a form of love \u2014 for ourselves and for those who come after us.<\/span><\/p>

    Breaking the Cycle<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

    My goal is simple:\u00a0<\/span>to stop passing on the genetic feeling and diagnosis of cancer<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

    I want to pass on\u00a0<\/span>resilience, faith, education, and wellness<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

    Leadership, especially in women, is built upon our ancestry. The women in our\u00a0family<\/span>\u00a0were trailblazers \u2014 teaching us to stand tall, stay rooted in faith, and remain unshakably resilient.<\/span><\/p>

    What we experience today, our DNA has experienced before. But like our ancestors, we can\u00a0<\/span>rewrite the story<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 we can change the narrative, change our outcomes, and change our legacy.<\/span><\/p>

    So that our children \u2014 our girls \u2014 will\u00a0<\/span>remember our stories<\/span>, but will not have to\u00a0<\/span>relive our pain<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

    We are, and will always be,\u00a0<\/span>our sisters\u2019 keepers<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>
